Get into the deets behind the royal fam.
Perhaps there is no one better to write about the House of Windsor than renowned author and journalist Tina Brown. With her editorial background (covered in The Vanity Fair Diaries), she has the insight of those closest to the Royal family and offers different perspectives on how events have transpired in the last couple of decades.
The Palace Papers (2022) ends up being an entertaining compendium of tales of mischief, power and obedience and finishes off with the question can the monarchy survive?
From the "Sex and Sensibility" chapter about Charles and Camilla, to the comparison of the Sussexes' exit with the American exit from Afghanistan, I have to say that Brown's English sense of humor makes this an easy and funny read for those keen to lend an ear to some royal gossip.
Tina's book offers greater depth into the history behind the family members than other one-sided versions of the truth, that is because she managed to talk to more than 120 people, most of them involved with the senior royals and their households.
I was especially surprised by some revelations on Diana's post-divorce phase and media exposure, as well as the extensive use of illegal hacking, tapping and blagging to members of the family and those closest to them. It has come to light by the former Prince Harry just how relentless the competition is between the communications strategists of each royal household. The Palace Papers will help the reader understand how the structure of the Firm works and why it's difficult to defy it. One wonders how much will it change with a new King in place.
The reader will make his/her own mind regarding the events since Diana's death and will probably learn to side with or understand some of the implicated subjetcs.
As Tina Brown puts it:
The book in your hand is the one I wish Meghan had been able to read before she packed up her house in Toronto and boarded the plane to England to plan her wedding to the younger son of the heir to the British throne. She would have learned that no one is a bigger brand than the Firm.
Grab a cuppa and don't miss this dive into Tina's thorough research!
