Wow. Taormina is all they say it is. Stunning natural beauty all around and a city filled with art and poise. When you first get there, you can hardly believe the dwindling streets and just how any car can get that far up. From almost every point in the city you can look upon the Etna volcano and, if you are lucky, admire the lava spectacle it puts up at night.
The Teatro Greco is one of the main attractions, possibly the most beautiful ancient theatre still standing and where you can enjoy live performances.
It is a must to pace around the Gardens in the Villa Comunale di Taormina and head to the beaches for some much necessary Italian tan. Swim or sail around Isola Bella (Beautiful Island) and shop or get a gelato (for me it's nocciola every day) in Corso Umberto. Your steps will take you to the Piazza IX Aprile and small quaint squares where you can sit down in front of the Duomo di Taormina for an espresso while taking in the bustle around.
Walk under the Porta Messina or up to the mountain to the Chiesa Madonna della Rocca for wonderful sights and a good exercise! Then relax and sit down every night to dine while you listen to the locals singing opera.
Finally, you cannot leave Taormina without trying the famous Bam Bar Sicilian granita or having a cocktail at the terrace of the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo while watching the sunset. Just don't forget to leave through the back door after strolling down the lovely gardens!
