Salta & Jujuy - Argentina Diaries

Salta and Jujuy are two provinces in the northwestern part of Argentina, often visited together due to the variety of attractions they have to offer and the long distances one has to go through to get to this region.

The capital of Salta carries the same name as the province it belongs to, and it is known as “Salta la linda” (Salta the beautiful). Easily toured by foot, enjoy some of Salta's colonial architecture and parks and the sight of the Basílica de San Francisco. May we suggest trying some of the typical empanadas from this area.

Relish the unique natural sights of the Valles Calchaquíes and Parque Nacional de los Cardones, ideal for photography lovers.

For wine lovers out there, the region of Salta has a nice variety of different strains to sample such as Cabernet Franc, Torrontés and Malbec. You may head to local restaurants or vineyards to pair with great food. If you have time, I highly recommend the Estancia and Bodega Colomé.

Head also to Purmamarca, a lovely small town framed by the beautiful Cerro de los Siete Colores (Seven Color Mountain), where each color represents a natural occurring mineral. If you can, I would stay at least one night in this unbelievable place to take the time to stroll its streets and where time seems to have stopped. The hotel El Manantial del Silencio is a great choice of lodging to discover the surroundings.

Other places that merit a visit are Tilcara and Quebrada de Humahuaca (declared by UNESCO a Natural and Culture Heritage Site), located in Jujuy. Here the culture of native populations will inspire travelers to know more about pre-Columbian and colonial heritages. Finally, be ready to take with you some picture souvenirs at the Salinas Grandes.

So maybe Salta and Jujuy are not the first tourist places people think of visit when coming to Argentina, but it is a main attraction you won't forget if you get the chance to get here as its landscapes are unique to the world.
