A new linguistic space takes over Northwest D.C.
Inside the historic building of the Franklin School, where Alexander Graham Bell transmitted his first successful "photophone" message, a different kind of museum is hosted.
Planet Word proposes to unravel the mysteries of language, taking into account its history, diversity and instrumental value.
A round through this museum will take you to explore interesting facts about languages such as those that are endangered today and what is being done to preserve them, what makes a poem such, what are the characteristics of the elvish language, and the etimology behind words.
As you step into the elevator / visual library, you will begin your round through the exquisite restored building and carefully designed spaces. Some worth mentioning are the magic library, the karaoke salon and the paint with words experience.
A section of the museum is dedicated to language and advsertising techniques, with fun exercises on double meaning, "weasel words", among others. You will also have the chance to spot the misleading ads as well as creating your own. Other sections include public speaking, songs, jokes and riddles.
Interactive experiences offered by Planet Word will allow every visitor to brush up on their literary resources and vocabulary. It is no wonder that the Scrabble game is sold at the museum shop at the end! (I also recommend playing the online word wipe game).
No matter your level of linguistic expertise, Planet Word is an interesting ride you will not want to miss!
