New York conveys so many images in people's heads just by saying its name.
Tall skyscrapers that have defied over and over the limits man can reach, posh bars and theatres that lighten up the nightlife and iconic spots that have served numerous film sets. Your first trip to New York might be filled with all the must-see tourist attractions but for those who have the chance to return to this magnificent metropolis, so much more awaits.
Let's start by one of my favorite places: Strand Book Store, where I would just ransack everything and take it home. Oh my what a treasure cove! It's a must if you are a book enthusiast like me.
After visiting the well-renowned Saks Fifth Avenue for some shopping, you should head to Bergdorf Goodman, where items are expensive but it is a sight for sore eyes if you are a fashion admirer. Often enough you may encounter models walking around for events and someone offering you prosecco.
They do have a lovely place to lunch overlooking Central Park if you are up for splurging a little, the BG restaurant is located on the seventh floor.
Ivan Ramen is hands down the best place for ramen in the city, hip with its comic book look and innovative noodle design. If ramen has not conquered your heart yet, I would say try this place before giving up on it as it manages to produce traditional recipes with an “Ivan” twist. Ivan has been featured in the hit Netflix series Chef's Table episodes and there he explains how his style came to be, as a foreigner who became one of the top ramen shops in Tokyo.
Sushi Yasuda. We were running late with my brother trying to find this restaurant near Grand Central Station when we started smelling fish from a huge truck. In front of the truck was in fact Sushi Yasuda. When you enter this temple it's as if you were suddenly in Japan. No one is speaking in a loud voice, the design of the space talks to a reserved crowd and they have a beautiful bar where you get a sushi man for yourself.
I tried the omakase for the first time and let me tell you, it was such a unique culinary experience, not only because most of the time I did not know what I was eating but because it had been a long time since food surprised me this much.
You do however have to like the taste of the sea in your mouth as you get a handful. I am sure they have alternative options in the menu, but to walk into this place you must be open to try new things. It is however quite pricey so bear that in mind.
Abracadabra. Looking for Halloween costumes, decor or special props? Head down to Abracadabra for what you imagine could be in the Hocus Pocus film or a ghost train. This place is ideal if you are looking for something to make your party pop.
The High Line. If you are looking for a free and fun tourist attraction, don't miss The High Line. A restored train track that now features parks, sculptures and food spots. Ideal to enjoy the different architecture New York has to offer.
The Museum of the city of New York. Maybe not the first museum that crosses your mind to go to, but still it gives you a good glimpse into how New York developed and is dealing with modern issues that other big cities do not face yet.
Chelsea Market. Located in the Meatpacking District, another free attraction that encompasses a food market plus shops, inside a building now owned by Google but that used to be the National Biscuit Company. Before that, the Algonquin Indians traded their game and crops on the banks of the Hudson River at this same spot, and the wholesale butchers used the ice from the river to cool their provisions. From spice markets to gelato stands, get ready and go hungry to enjoy both food, shops and art expos!
Central Park Zoo. Started out as a menagerie and evolved into a zoo. Even though the animals have very little space considering the modern concept of a zoo, you can still see the creatures from pretty up close. Maybe an ideal outing with kids and must say though, loved the classical architecture and I am sure (and hoping) I will never again see a bear that up close.
Sant Ambroeus. Looking for an authentic Italian experience? You not only have one Sant Ambroeus but two. There is a more formal restaurant and a coffee shop, where you can still get incredible little sandwiches and baked goods.
Katz Deli. The place chosen for the fake orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally, Katz is famous for its pastrami sandwiches and other cold meats. During World War II, when the three sons of the owner were serving in the army, the company's slogan became “Send A Salami To Your Boy In The Army”. Nowadays, the phrase lines the walls of the place together with pictures of celebrities who have been there.
Max Brenner. Chocolate by the bald man. For all chocolate lovers out there! The right place to go when you feel like having hot cocoa, crepes, waffles, fondue, chocolate pizza or amazing caramel and chocolate covered pecans.
Starbucks Reserve. The New York Roastery. This Starbucks is unlike any other. Located near the Chelsea Market, hop in for a morning brew or any time brew of your choice and enjoy a short tour of how coffee is roasted while you see grains fly by through tubes hanging by the ceiling. An enormous place filled with different intriguing bars and baristas.
Governors Island. A jewel next to the city for those looking to escape the madness of Manhattan. This place is ideal for Spring and Summer weather. The beauty of it? Free ferry on Sundays from Lower Manhattan, no cars, just bikes or walking. I loved this place, not only did I go for exactly the time the Poetry Festival was going on, but the family ambiance and the views of New York from here are truly one of a kind and not many tourists would know of this place. Definitely an off the beaten path worth exploring.
Governors Island derives its name from the late 18th century, when the colonial assembly reserved the island for the use of royal appointed New York governors.
Angel's Share. A speakeasy hidden through the Japanese restaurant Village Yokocho. Pay attention because there are at least two similar restaurants in the same block! (Saying this because my brother and I entered the wrong one first and asked secretively for the hidden bar and later had to be redirected, I still laugh about that).
It has a lovely view of the Stuyvesant Square and a large painting of cherubs over the bar.
Le bain. Between the stunning view and the jacuzzi, what else do you need? A good place to dance and grab a drink if you are looking for some fun.
PHD Rooftop Lounge. Right in the middle of Manhattan, great drinks and a fun atmosphere of many levels to enjoy new company and dance. Its space distribution throughout different levels is flexible if you don't want to be immersed in the noise.
Jimmy bar. A chill roof top bar for chatting rather than dancing with great views of the One Freedom Tower.
New York will keep on changing and evolving so stay tuned for any updates!
