A Trip Down the Uruguayan Coast

Uruguay is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Latin America, especially for the summer season. Once you get there is easy to see why, as the coastal charms offer relaxation together with good food and nightlife.

We start our road trip from Colonia del Sacramento, a lovely colonial town where you can walk or bike and take delight on its restaurants and bars while learning some of its history. Visit La Casa de Los Limoneros or book a stay in this adorable place filled with lemon zesty sweetness.

After Colonia, visit Montevideo, Uruguay's capital city. Take a walk or exercise along the rambla to admire the waves of the ocean or go to the neighborhood of Los Pocitos which offers the liveliness one looks in all big cities. The place might remind you of nostalgic readings of Mario Benedetti as you sip your daily coffee or take a bite into the best ham and cheese sandwiches or the iconic chivitos.

Head to Punta del Este, also known as the “Saint-Tropez of Latin America” for its dance clubs, casinos, exclusive beaches and shopping, among an array of miscellaneous entertainment. It is a must to spend one afternoon in Carlos Páez Vilaró's Casapueblo where you get an incredible view of the sunset.

Passing by La Barra, Manantiales, and José Ignacio you will encounter lovely places to relax in a carefree environment. May we insist that you try having lunch at La Huella restaurant. Depending on the time of the year you visit, some of the places might be closed. Travel to Laguna Garzón, near José Ignacio, one of the most recent developed areas.

Uruguay's beaches extend for many kilometers through La Paloma, La Pedrera, Cabo Polonio, Barra de Valizas and Punta del Diablo where you can make stops as you fancy. We used Posada Valizas as base camp and loved it as its host was extremely kind and welcoming.

Finish your road trip at Parque Nacional Santa Teresa, gorgeous for its natural beauty. You are invited to stay the night in one of the cabins, hostels or camping sites and visit its fortress's history.
